{Fix your skin. Naturally!}

Beautiful skin starts from the inside!

The Skintervention crew absolutely LOVES skincare superfoods. Today we want to talk about a superfood that’s so wonderful, so nutritious, and so delicious (yes – delicious) that it’s earned a permanent spot in our top five!

What is it? You guessed it…SARDINES! HTES2

Sardines provide s a whole-food source of EPA and DHA (or “fish oil”) that comes directly from the fish to YOU with NONE of the processing that’s involved with standard fish oil supplements.

An added bonus: fish contain other critical nutrients like…

CoQ10…which protects our cells from aging prematurely AND acts as an antioxidant.

Astaxanthin…one of the most powerful antioxidants.

Taurine…A nutrient found only in animal-based foods that helps build and maintain healthy skin.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids…which work WITH taurine to keep skin healthy.

Sardines are also dense in protein, vitamin D and calcium (for strong bones!), potassium, and selenium, all of which are incredibly beneficial for healthy, glowing skin!

So that’s why you should be eatin’ em. But what else do you need to know? They’re not all created equal. Always buy wild-caught. Always remember to check the ingredients label – some are canned in nasty industrial oils, like cottonseed and soybean. Steer clear of those!

(We like Vital Choice Wild-Caught SardinesWild-Planet Brand, and BELA Sardines.)

Squeamish about these little fishies? We’ve got a few tips to help make ’em tasty. One of our favorite ways to eat sardines is by smothering them with cumin and guacamole. Cumin really “cuts” any fishy taste, and guac adds some healthy fat and fiber.

You can take things a step further and do a lettuce boat, adding pico or salsa as desired. Or try them atop a bed of greens, with avocado, and top with extra-virgin olive oil. Mustard or all-natural salad dressings like Tessemae’s or PaleoChef are great ways to add non-fishy flavor.

Eating sardines doesn’t have to be complicated or scary. We eat sardines about twice (or more!) a week – they make a great light breakfast or lunch.
